The History of Handbags
Handbags have been part of (fashion) history since the 14th century when Egyptian hieroglyphs show women carrying bags attached to their hips filled with their cherished possessions. Even 700 years ago, handbags served other purposes other than their practical use for carrying goods. Women embroidered their bags with precious metals and jewelry as a way to distinguish them and portray a level of affluence to others.
Throughout the centuries, handbag designs became smaller and more practical to be used on a daily basis. Designers had begun experimenting with different dyes and leathers to produce quality goods. The lower costs and higher availability of purses allowed women to accessories their outfits with a variety purses for different occasions.
The evolution continued through the mid 20th century when designers such as Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Chanel transformed the "accessory" into the focal point of an outfit, and utilized only the highest quality materials for their purses.
Fast forward to the 21st century and not much has changed. Worldwide handbag sales revenues are in the Billions and there are as many handbag designs as there are people who can afford them.
